Every so often, your toilet may show signs of trouble, which can be incredibly inconvenient for you and your family. Fortunately, there are a few minor plumbing repairs you can handle on your own. Below are simple issues you can fix.

A Guide to Common Plumbing Issues

1. Running Toilet

When water keeps flowing in the tank through the fill valve, your toilet will run nonstop. While this is a relatively easy fix, if you ignore it, you will waste water and have increased water bills. Usually, the flapper is not sealing the opening of the flush valve, keeping water flowing into the bowl. Installing a new flapper will usually fix the issue; however, in some cases, the whole flush valve assembly needs to be replaced.

2. Flushing Problem

plumbingSometimes the handle is too tight or too loose, which can lead to flushing troubles. Turn the nut that attaches it counterclockwise to tighten it or clockwise to loosen.

If you notice flushing issues even after fixing the handle, have a plumber check that the flush valve setup is working. They will ensure it’s the right size and that the chain isn’t getting tangled during flushing. Finally, they’ll make sure the lift arm and chain are still attached to the flapper.

3. Leaks

Small leaks can often be fixed by tightening the mounting bolts at the base of the toilet. Also, check that there are no cracks that may be leaking water. If you don’t fix the issue, your home may experience water damage, especially to your flooring or the ceiling below the bathroom. If you can’t find the source of the leak, call an expert for plumbing help.

4. Minor Clogs

For minor clogs, a plunger will help release whatever is blocking your drain. In some cases, when clogs are particularly tough, a drain snake or toilet auger is needed. If plungers and augers do not seem to release the blockage and you notice your fixtures are still slow or backing up, the clog may be deeper in the sewer line and will require a plumber’s expertise.

5. High Water Level

If toilet water is too high and spilling into the overflow tube, you might need to clean or replace the fill valve. When debris gets in or the valve is old, the shut-off mechanism that controls water levels will not do its job. Clearing any grime or installing a new one will generally solve the issue.
