Most people don’t think about their roofing beyond the visible shingle layer. There are, however, several layers beneath that which play an important role in protecting your home. Understanding what each of these does will help you know when it’s time to schedule repairs and take preventive measures.

Frame & Decking

Decking is the foundation of a roof. Also called sheathing, this layer is usually made of plywood or OSB sheets, attached to the trusses and joints of the roofing frame to create an even surface. A layer of insulation is often attached to the back to help regulate home temperature in the attic.

Starter Strip

roofingStarter strips are a line of shingles that are installed on the edges of your roofing. Roofers will use adhesive to secure them to the decking. These are the design base they’ll follow when installing the rest of the shingles to ensure they’re in straight lines.

Underlayment

The felt underlayment protects your home from water damage. Should moisture leak through the upper layers, the underlayment will keep it from seeping into the decking and attic. This prevents rot, mold growth, and many other serious issues.

Shingles & Exterior Features

A layer of shingles, metal panels, or your material of choice are laid out on top of the underlayment and decking. This is your home’s first defense against the elements and also what makes your roofing attractive. This outer layer includes several features.

Ridge caps are attached at the top slopes of roofing to keep moisture from seeping in. Flashing is secured over protrusions to drive water toward the gutters. There can also be a ventilation pipe in the ridge so air vents can clear stale air from your home.
