Traveling can sometimes be a pain, but when you have neck pain, it can be even worse. Long hours in the car or on the airplane can cause stiffness and discomfort, and sleeping in an unfamiliar bed can only make it worse. With a few simple travel hacks, though, you can keep the pain from disrupting your trip.

5 Tips for Managing Neck Pain During Travel

1. Pack Light

neck painLugging heavy bags through the airport is one surefire way to exacerbate neck pain. To reduce discomfort, pack light, bringing only what you really need for the trip. Use a suitcase with wheels, or a backpack, so you’re not carrying a heavy backpack on one shoulder and putting pressure on your neck.

2. Bring Pain Relief

Always pack pain relief in your carry-on bag. Heat or ice packs, over-the-counter pain relievers, and pillows to support your neck and lumbar region. A lumbar pillow helps keep your spine in alignment, reducing neck strain. If carrying a pillow isn't an option, ask a flight attendant for an ice pack once you’re in the air.

3. Stretch

Gently stretching your neck every so often can help reduce pain. Move your head from side to side and up and down and rotate your shoulders to keep the muscles loose. If you’re driving, stop to stretch your legs at regular intervals, or get up and walk around while waiting for the plane and during the flight. Moving around helps prevent stiffness in your back that worsens neck pain.

4. Request the Right Pillows

Before leaving home, call your hotel to ask about the availability of orthopedic pillows that can provide extra support for your neck. If that’s not an option, consider bringing your own pillow from home or buying one when you arrive. In a pinch, you can place rolled-up towels under your neck for support while you sleep.

5. Maintain Proper Posture

Avoid bending your neck too long (such as while reading or using your phone) to reduce stiffness. Hold your book or tablet at eye level if possible. Don’t hold your phone between your ear and neck while talking, and don’t slouch.
