To maximize the value of your storage unit, you need to fit as much as possible inside, without sacrificing utility or comfort. The following space-saving tips will help you decide how much room you need and how to organize your items.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Storage Unit

1. Fill Cavities

If you can safely nest items inside drawers, shelves, and other open spaces, this will help you save space and limit packing materials.

To keep objects from shifting during transit, use blankets, linen, or crumpled paper to completely fill empty spaces.

Just remember to label pieces appropriately so you know where to find your belongings after you’ve stored them. For example, you can place a strip of masking tape on the exterior of the item and write a brief description of its contents, like “utensils” or “ornaments.”

2. Disassemble Furniture

Brestorage unitak down furniture into parts that are less bulky and easier to store. If you remove the legs from a table, for example, you can slide the tabletop against the wall, and then secure the legs with rope or store them in a box. This approach is simpler than trying to squeeze objects around your furniture like a jigsaw puzzle.

When you disassemble furniture, keep the hardware in a sealed plastic bag, label it, and tape or tie the bundle to a furniture part so you can quickly find the screws and bolts to reassemble later.

3. Stack Standard-Size Boxes

It’s hard to stack items of different shapes and sizes. To keep stacks from collapsing or tumbling sideways, use uniform boxes with the same dimension, and pack each container to the brim.

With a stable, orderly approach, you can organize boxes into columns no higher than eye level. Maintain at least 20-inch aisles between towers so you can move freely around the storage unit.

4. Map Out the Unit

Before you start moving boxes, take a few minutes to plan how you want to organize items. Map out your storage unit using a pencil and graph paper. Measure the dimensions of every box and ensure you have enough space to store everything you need. This outline may also come in handy if you decide to catalog boxes by season, room, or function.
