Your fabric awnings are an investment in functionality and aesthetic appeal for your home. These fixtures can keep your windows and patios cool in the summer and stylish in the winter. To preserve them, it’s crucial to maintain and clean them correctly. The following do’s and don’ts will help you keep your awnings clean year-round.

Do:

Clean with mild soap and water.

Clear any cobwebs, dust, and plant debris from the fabric with a clean brush or broom before wetting the material. These fixtures can be cleaned with a simple mixture of mild soap and warm water. Dip a rag in the mixture and spot-clean as needed.

Let the fabric air dry.

The fabric of the awning should be completely dry before it is rolled up, retracted, or stored. Let the fabric air dry in the sun. Storing or rolling the awning while damp may encourage the growth of mold and mildew, which will eventually stain and destroy the fabric.

Don’t:

Pressure wash awnings.

awningPressure washing awnings will damage the fabric or framework. Depending on the pressure, this machine can even cut through the material. Instead, use a garden hose to wet the fabric and rinse it after thoroughly cleaning it with a rag. A hose can be used for more frequent rinses in between cleanings, too.

Use bleach.

Bleach solutions can remove the stains of mildew, but the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. Powerful bleach can discolor the fabric and weaken the material. When exposed to harsh rays, a bleach-ridden awning may fray and tear under the hot sun. It’s best to stick to soap and water. For tough stains, discuss professionally cleaning the awning with your installation company.
