Although there’s still a chill in the air, spring will be here before you know it. Aside from welcoming the blooming flowers and warmer weather, an integral part of the season is cleaning up your home, and your fence is undoubtedly a part of that. By tending to the wooden fencing on your property, not only will you be brightening it up for the season and any guests you may have, but you’ll also be mending the damage done by the cold weather and the rain. If you are unsure how to beautify your fence for spring, here’s what you need to do.

How to Revitalize Wooden Fencing

1. Clean

Due to the winter rain and cold, it’s not uncommon for a fence to display algae, mold, mildew, or grime. The most efficient and thorough way to remove these substances is by cleaning the surface dirt with a wood-friendly cleaning solution and a wire brush. You can make the cleaning solution on your own by mixing one part white vinegar with one part water. Then, once you’ve dealt with the top layer, you can then use a pressure washer. For your personal safety and the structural integrity of the fence, always refer to the pressure washer’s instructions.

2. Repair

If there’s a plank loose, replace the screws. If a plank is cracked or missing, replace the entire board. Although it depends on the situation and damage, generally, it’s easier to leave these tasks to professionals who have the necessary tools and supplies.

3. Refinish

After the fence has been cleaned and mended, it’s time for either a fresh coat of paint or stain. Both options require a bit of preparatory work, but staining is a little more involved. If you want to repaint your wooden fencing, you’ll need to sand the surface and apply a layer of primer before painting. However, if you’d prefer to stain it, you must first use a stain stripping agent before sanding the surface. If you skip this step, the new stain won’t go on evenly. Then, after staining, don’t forget the sealant. Once this step is complete, your fence will be ready for spring.
