Many construction projects benefit from the use of stainless steel fabrication. Stainless steel is often preferred over other materials, like carbon steel, because of its lasting beauty and durability. However, all metals are susceptible to electrolysis corrosion, which ruins their structural integrity. Here’s more information about how this process affects different types of steel.

How Electrolysis Corrosion Harms Steel

Often confused with galvanic corrosion, electrolysis corrosion refers to the process of steel breaking down at an accelerated pace. It occurs when two dissimilar metals come into contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte, like slightly acidic water.

stainless steel fabricationIn these conditions, water (hot or cold) and an electrical current will flow between the two metals, causing one of them to corrode. The likelihood of a metal corroding depends on its location on the galvanic table. Of the two metals, the one that’s on the lower end of the table is more passive. This metal will become the cathode, and it’ll be eaten away by the electrolysis corrosion process.

How Stainless Steel Fabrication Combats This Problem

Unlike processes that use carbon steel, like welding, stainless steel fabrication makes the metal more resistant to electrolysis corrosion. Both steels are iron-based, and the iron is easily corrupted by the oxygen in the air. Overexposure to oxygen elicits a chemical reaction, causing the iron in carbon steel to oxidize and corrode.

Although stainless steel is also iron-based, it’s infused with at least 12% of chromium. This elemental addition gives stainless steel a thin, chemically-stable oxide film on its exterior. Although the oxygen will try to corrode the iron, the protective oxide film will repair itself during the chemical reaction. As a result, the film will prevent the iron from oxidizing and rusting.
