How to Manage the Effects of Stress on Your Skin, Penfield, New York

Feeling anxious or irritable, having trouble sleeping, and experiencing aches and pains are all common signs of stress. What many people don’t realize is that stress also has effects on skin complexion. From triggering flareups of existing conditions to disrupting your facial skin care routine, unmanaged stress is detrimental to many aspects of your well-being. Here’s more information to help you practice proper self-care.

How Stress Affects the Skin

When you’re under stress, your skin will show the signs. You might have more breakouts, for example, or itchy and red patches. Stress can also contribute to a dull complexion and dark circles under the eyes.

This happens for several reasons. Stress is a known trigger for many skin conditions, including rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and itchy hives and rashes. This is linked to the excess production of cortisol. Known as the “fight or flight” hormone, cortisol spurs an array of bodily processes that affect everything from sleep quality to how the body digests food. Cortisol also tells your glands to produce more oil, which can ultimately lead to acne.

Many of the behaviors and coping methods used to respond to stress also contribute to skin issues. Unhealthy eating, excess alcohol intake, smoking, and skipping your skin care routine can all lead to problems with skin texture and appearance.

How to Improve the Look of Your Skin

facialManaging stress is not only important for your skin, but also your overall health. Here are a few tips to follow when you feel anxious or stressed:

  • Practice self-care: It only takes a few minutes to wash and moisturize your face. Spending time on self-care might even help you relax and be more mindful.
  • Drink plenty of water: Skip the caffeine and alcohol and rehydrate with water. This helps keep your skin plump and clear. Drink at least half a gallon a day.
  • Get enough sleep: Sleep helps prevent swollen eyes, wrinkles, and undereye circles. Experts recommend getting seven to nine hours of sleep daily.
  • Try stress-relief activities: Taking a short walk or yoga class, practicing deep breathing, or listening to some music can help you unwind. Get help from a counselor or doctor if these pastimes aren’t enough to relax you.
