Changing your HVAC filter regularly not only keeps the warm or cool air circulating throughout your home free of excess contaminants, but it also prolongs the heating and cooling system’s life. Dirty filters restrict airflow within the HVAC system, causing it to work harder and ultimately require a premature replacement. Here’s how to replace your system’s filter while keeping manufacturer recommendations in mind.

5 Steps for Changing an HVAC System Filter

1. Turn Off System

Find the HVAC switch on your fuse breaker to shut the system down, as you do not want it to turn on when you’re removing the filter. The system could activate if the thermostat tells it to, which means the circulating fan—the component that pushes air through the ductwork and vents—would come on as well. You don’t want unfiltered air to circulate, so ensure the system is off before you begin.

2. Locate Filter

Determine the filter’s location in light of your system type. If you’re removing the filter from a basement furnace, for example, follow the ductwork. The filter panel will be near the duct that’s adjacent to the unit.

If you’re removing the filter from an AC wall unit, it will likely be under the grille. It could also be at the ceiling intake vent if you have a whole-house system. Should you still have issues locating the filter, refer to the diagram in your owner’s manual.

3. Remove Dirty Filter

hvacUnscrew the panel door, if applicable, to remove the old filter. Carefully place it in a garbage bag so its contaminants don’t have time to enter the air. You may want to wear a dust mask while you work so you don’t have to deal with watery eyes, sneezing, and congestion.

4. Install Replacement

Wipe down the panel or air handler cover to eliminate dust and debris that contributes to system clogs. Use your owner’s manual to ensure you are installing the new filter the right way. Most filters feature arrows so you install them with the correct side up.

5. Note the Date

Replace the panel or cover, then write down the date of the replacement for future reference. You may need to replace your filter monthly, depending on factors such as how many furry pets you have, whether you smoke indoors, and how many people live in your home. More people and animals create more debris.
