Some homeowners keep the manual that came with their HVAC units, but others live a little more dangerously. If you’re getting ready for your seasonal air filter change, you may be unsure about which one to get. The right filter will make an impact on both indoor air quality and the energy efficiency of your heating and air conditioning, so consider the following guide if you’ve never replaced yours before.

Determine the Correct Size

The filter you’re replacing will likely note the dimensions on a label near its edge. Look for three measurement numbers denoting the width, length, and thickness, such as 20 X 25 X 1. If not, grab your measuring tape and make note of the dimensions yourself. Filters generally range from an inch to a few inches thick.

Decide Which Type of Filter You Need

Fiberglass

Fiberglass filters are ideal for promoting maximum airflow in your space. This is a good option if you don’t have pets, allergies, or chronic respiratory conditions because it doesn’t significantly improve the quality of your air. This type is marked between a 1 and 4 MERV rating, a number that denotes the filter’s Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.

Pleated

They trap a majority of airborne contaminants like pollen, dander, and mites and do an acceptable job of improving the air quality of the home. This mid-range filter rates between a 5 and 8 MERV.

Electrostatic

These filters offer good filtration and ample airflow through self-charging fibers that eliminate particulates. There are washable options that offer cost savings after a few months. Electrostatic filters have a wide range between 2 and 10 MERV.

HEPA

HEPA filters are the most efficient, trapping 99% or more of all mold, fine dust, asbestos, and bacteria that pass through it. With an off-the-charts MERV rating, heap filters range between 17 and 20.
