With spring coming up, your lawn is going to reappear finally—and so are the weeds that you must control as part of your lawn care routine. You can likely spot a weed when you see one, but you probably don’t know much about it. Below are a few of the most frequent types that you will find, as well as how to identify and remove them.

A Guide to Common Lawn Weeds

1. Crabgrass

This common weed may start small, but it can turn into a lawn care issue if you don’t remove it quickly. Crabgrass is a bright green plant that grows multiple sprigs with long, thin leaves, and can reach up to two feet. It is easy to control if you regularly mow your lawn and trim it back.

2. Dandelion

Dandelion is a common weed that can grow in a variety of soils and climates. Thanks to its deep roots, dandelion plants are challenging to control with mowing alone, and pulling them out by hand is time-consuming. Instead, use herbicides and a specialized tool, like a dandelion knife, to eliminate them.

You’ll recognize this weed by its yellow flowers, which contain many narrow little petals. As they mature, the petals become seed pods. They look like small balls of white fluff and will easily blow away in the wind.

3. Canada Thistle

lawn careCanada thistle can scare off homeowners with its long, sharp thorns. Uncontrolled, it can grow up to four feet tall with roots going as deep as 15 feet. You can spot them by the bright purple flowers that grow in the late summer. You must act quickly to eradicate this weed. You’ll likely need a powerful herbicide to destroy the thick roots and prevent it from regrowing.

4. White Clover

White clover is another weed that grows abundantly in spring and summer. It has white flower clusters and three-leaved clovers. This weed is not particularly harmful, but it can prevent other plants from getting nutrients and affect the look of your lawn. To prevent it, regularly mulch your garden beds. However, if you already have white clover growing, you can pull it by hand, as the roots are not deep.
