With the time for spring cleaning fast approaching, you can begin to take stock of what tasks need to be done around your home. Windows are often covered by drapes and curtains, so it may be easy to overlook them. However, they should be cleaned and touched up twice a year to avoid degradation. This guide will help you wash away winter’s wrath and have them fully prepared for spring weather.

How to Clean Your Windows

To begin, you’ll need to gather a soft brush, a vacuum with a dusting attachment, hot water mixed with a mild cleaning solution, a glass cleaner, and a microfiber cloth. After attaching the dusting brush, vacuum the window frames and ledges, making sure to open the window to clean between the railings. When repeating this step on the outside, first clear away any dirt.

Next, remove the screen and wash it with the hot, sudsy water and the soft brush. Rinse and let it dry completely before putting it back. Wait until it’s at least partially cloudy before cleaning the glass to avoid dealing with streaks. Then, generously spray the glass cleaner, especially over areas with any caked-on dirt, and use the microfiber cloth to wipe away all grime.

How to Repair Windows

windowsWinter can take its toll on your window frames. Colder conditions can cause the sealant to crack and break. To prevent moisture from seeping inside this spring, replace it with caulk, silicone, or adhesive sealant tape.

If any of your screens are damaged, they should also be repaired or replaced to protect your home against insect invaders. Small spots can typically be repaired with a mesh screen kit, but if the screen is severely worn, you’ll need to purchase a new one.

If you have wood window frames, it’s also necessary to check the stain or paint for fading or flaking. When this protective coating is impaired, the windows are susceptible to rotting and damage from sunlight and insects.
