Everyone knows that dentists recommend flossing, but you may not have the time for this task, or you may easily forget it after brushing your teeth. However, flossing is essential for the health of your mouth and body, so learn more about why it should be incorporated into your nightly routine below.

Why Is Flossing Important?

Strong Teeth

After you eat, bacteria form in your mouth and on your teeth. If you have any leftover food that hasn't been washed away, these tiny organisms can develop even quicker. Flossing will remove bacteria that has already formed, while also getting rid of any food that could encourage more. In addition to making your mouth cleaner, this will prevent cavities.

Less Plaque

Immediately after you're done eating, plaque begins to form. This white film will lead to cavities if it stays on the teeth for more than 48 hours. Brushing and flossing between your teeth will effectively remove plaque and keep your teeth stronger.

Healthier Body

dentistGingivitis—caused by a buildup of plaque in between and around the teeth—creates an immune response that damages the gums and results in tooth decay. If gingivitis isn't cared for by a dentist, it could lead to a disease called periodontitis, which is inflammation around the teeth. Late-stage periodontitis may even result in tooth loss and increase the risk of  stroke and heart attacks.

How Do You Floss Correctly?

Before flossing, choose the instrument you wish to use. Regular string floss is the most common, but be sure to use PTFE floss instead of Nylon, as it's stronger and less likely to break. Floss picks are also popular for their convenience and ease.

If you're using regular string floss, make it around 18 inches long so you can wind most of it around two fingers, one on each hand. Have at least one inch of string available to place between your teeth.

When flossing, slide the string up and down gently between your teeth. Also, make sure to curve the floss under the gum line, since some food may be stuck there. Finally, clean the floss before moving to the next tooth. Keep in mind that your gums may bleed the first few times you floss, but that should stop over time.
