Whether you need jaw surgery to correct your bite or improve the look of a facial injury or congenital condition, you may be wondering what the recovery will be like. Because the jaw can move up and down in addition to sliding side to side, it may need to be stabilized with either elastic bands or wires after surgery, which can complicate recovery for a patient. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow to promote healing.

Do:

Use ice and keep your head elevated.

After the surgery, your face, jaw, and neck are likely to swell and bruise. To keep yourself comfortable and mitigate as much swelling as possible, use ice packs in 20-minute increments throughout the day.

Also, sleep in a recliner or a bed with lots of pillows to keep your head elevated as you rest.

Stock up on clear liquids.

Depending on the extent of your jaw surgery, you may be restricted to a clear liquid diet after the procedure. Before you undergo your operation, stock up on nutritious, clear liquids such as bone broth. When you’re allowed to consume other liquids, purchase enriched vitamin shakes.

Don’t:

Take medication improperly.

jaw surgeryYour doctor may prescribe antibiotics or pain relievers to keep you comfortable and infection-free after your procedure. Take the medication exactly as prescribed to avoid complications, such as overdosing. If the medication isn’t controlling your pain levels, talk with your doctor about alternatives.

Strain yourself.

When you have a jaw surgery coming up, plan to take it easy. You shouldn’t exert yourself at all for the first week following the surgery. Walking and basic housework like doing the dishes are alright, but don’t try anything physically strenuous until you receive clearance from your physician.
