You encounter many threats to your windshield’s integrity while on the road, from rocks kicked up by other vehicles to collision damage and falling debris. If your windshield is chipped or cracked, you’ll need to determine whether you should have it repaired or a full windshield replacement. The guide below will help you make the right decision.

Windshield Repair

Chips are the most common type of windshield damage, and they can often be repaired. This type of damage has a clear point of impact, and it may have small cracks spreading out from it. Chips smaller than three inches can be repaired, assuming they aren’t too deep. Larger cracks up to 14 inches in length can generally be repaired as well.

This requires specialized equipment and training to drill down through the first layer of glass without damaging the plastic layer beneath. A resin is then injected into the crack or chip to seal it.

Windshield Replacement

Some types of cracks or chips cannot be repaired and will require a full windshield replacement. Chips larger than the size of a quarter, significant cracks, and damage around the outer edge of the glass will compromise the windshield’s integrity, making replacement necessary. Similarly, any damage that is directly in the driver’s line of sight cannot be fixed, since a repaired crack is still visible and will affect your visibility. Any damage that goes all the way through to the inner layer of glass cannot be fixed.

To replace a windshield, professionals can remove the glass using suction cups. They’ll apply an adhesive to its edges, which will hold the new glass in place.
