Getting pulled over by law enforcement can sometimes be a nerve-wracking experience, particularly for the first time. Drivers can get pulled over for any number of traffic violations, from speeding to texting while driving to having broken brake lights. Here are three ways to navigate these and other scenarios, including DWI charges.

3 Steps to Take If You Get Pulled Over

1. Pull Over to a Safe Area

DWI chargesIf an officer signals you to pull over, do so safely. Typically, you want to pull over to the right side of the road to avoid blocking traffic and causing a road hazard. If you’re in the left-hand lane of a highway, signal properly and switch lanes carefully. Pull over slowly so the officer doesn’t mistakenly think you’re fleeing the scene.

2. Be Respectful

It’s in your best interest to remain calm and speak to the officer in a polite manner. Don’t interrupt and comply when they ask for your license and registration. If your ID is somewhere other than the glove compartment, communicate that so the officer doesn’t worry that you’re searching for a weapon. Always avoid arguing, even if you disagree with a ticket. If you want to contest it, save that for your appointed court date.

3. Know Your Rights

While you always want to behave in a respectful manner, you should also be aware of your rights. For instance, if you’re unaware of any wrongdoing, you do have the right to ask why you were pulled over if the officer doesn’t ask first. Officers are only supposed to pull over vehicles with probable cause.

Additionally, you have the right to refuse a search without a warrant. Exceptions to this rule would be if there are illegal items in plain sight of if there’s reasonable suspicion of a crime. In the event of potential DWI charges, you also have the right to refuse a sobriety test.
