As the snow melts and the spring rains arrive in full force, it’s time to think about your septic system. All that water can overwhelm the tank, so you’ll need to be proactive about keeping it from flooding. Some simple maintenance tasks will protect your system throughout the upcoming season and the year ahead.

Spring Prep for Septic Systems

1. Inspect the Filter

Winter storms may have brought a lot of debris and other buildup into your septic tank, which the filter catches. Check the filter so you can clear it of that debris and scum. This keeps the system working smoothly so waste can flow freely, and leaves the filter clear to catch any more debris that spring storms might flush in.

2. Adjust Your Downspouts

Check that your downspouts are not directing the runoff toward your septic tank or drain field. If these areas are flooded, it will compromise the system. You can redirect your drainage using downspout extenders or by digging some drainage ditches.

3. Check for Problem Spots

Walk your property after the first storm of the season to look for signs of any problem spots. Pooling water or ground that appears to be sinking means that you need to make some changes to your drainage system. Standing water in your drain field is a clear sign of trouble that means you need to call your septic contractor immediately.

4. Schedule Pumping

Check your pumping schedule; most systems need it done every three to five years. If you are due for a pumping, or will be due within the next six months, this is the ideal time to schedule it. Pumping the tank now will leave it better equipped to handle excessive rainfall or the excess water runoff from your sprinkler system this spring.
