Funeral services have changed a lot throughout the years, adapting to accommodate new values, preferences, and opinions. Because of this, it’s common for mourners to ask what is and isn’t appropriate to wear to a funeral. Gone are the days when black dresses and suits were the only acceptable answer. If you’re looking for advice about what to wear to a loved one’s service, the following tips can prevent you from appearing disrespectful.

3 Attire Tips for a Funeral Service

1. Dress Conservatively

Dressing conservatively is the best plan for a funeral or memorial service. Black isn’t necessary, but you should avoid wearing flashy patterns or bright colors such as yellow or pink. Instead, choose dark, neutral colors such as navy or gray. Women should wear dresses that cover their shoulders and knees while men should wear slacks and a nice dress shirt.

2. Consider the Type of Service

Events held at a church may call for more dressy attire. Similarly, if your late loved one dressed formally as their norm, it is respectful to do the same for their service.

3. Be Mindful Of Your Shoes

Choose shoes that go with the formality of the rest of your outfit, and don’t wear sneakers. Brown shoes are well suited to blue, brown, or light grey clothes. Black shoes pair well with any color, but especially black, dark blue, or dark grey.
