Hardwood flooring gives off a rustic, durable look. But without proper care, wood flooring is malleable and subject to scratching. The constant wear and tear of furniture moving over the floor can be especially hazardous to hardwood. Here are a few tips to help you protect your floors from your furniture.

How to Prevent Damage to Your Floors

1. Use Furniture Pads

Attach felt or cork furniture pads to the feet of each piece, where it makes contact with the ground. Without these, a wooden chair will scratch the hardwood flooring when people scoot in and out from it. You can also use furniture pads when rearranging. Glider pads will help cushion the feet or corners of your furniture, sliding them along the floor without damage. Use wider pads for heavier pieces like tables or couches.

2. Lift Furniture

Pushing your couch across the floor when redecorating may seem like the easiest option, but it can scratch and permanently damage your wood floors. Gather a couple of people to help pick up heavy items to move them. It might take more planning and time, but it is worth protecting your floors.

2. Put Down Rugs

Roll out an area rug before bringing in your furniture. The chic decoration will prevent any damages from furniture directly on the wood. Make sure that the rug is thick enough, and its backing is safe for wood floors. Some rugs can scratch or yellow hardwood flooring. If the rug is not very thick, add a rug pad to ensure heavy furniture doesn’t dent your flooring.

4. Add Wheels

Choosing furniture with wheels also helps prevent damage. A lot of wheeled furniture, like cabinets and islands, can lock into place when not being moved. When you are ready to move it, just unlock the wheels. Some wheels can leave dents or marks, so check the manufacturer’s label first. Implement wheels by using a dolly when moving larger pieces.
