Are you planning to bring your horse on vacation this year? Maybe you’re just excited to put on your riding boots and enjoy warm days riding trails around your home. Either way, keep in mind these three tips for getting prepared for the trail riding season.

3 Ways to Get Ready for Trail Rides

1. Bring Water & Food

A long day on the trail calls for much-needed hydration and snacks. Pack a small bag full of trail mix, fruit, and granola bars. Each person riding will need one to three liters of water as well. Check the trail ahead of time to see if there will be any streams or ponds for your horse to have a drink. Otherwise, pack another gallon of water, a few apples, or carrots for your four-legged friend.

2. Safety Preparations

Pack it with a few bandages, antiseptic spray, and antibacterial cream for any cuts or scrapes along your route. Add a whistle to the kit just in case you get separated from your group and need to make a signal.

3. GPS or Compass

While smartphones have this capability, bring a battery-powered or solar-powered GPS or compass just in case you wander into an area with no service. If you’re being led by a trail guide, you may not need it, but it’s good to have with you just in case. Keep it on your person in case you get separated from your horse.
