A key that gets stuck in a lock is an inconvenience, but with a little luck, sometimes you can remove it on your own. There could be multiple reasons why the key is stuck, but as long as nothing is broken inside, the following tips should be able to help you remove it. If, after significant effort, it doesn't budge, call a locksmith for professional help.

How to Get a Key Unstuck From a Lock

1. Determine the Problem

Stuck keys are often caused by the teeth of the key getting jammed against the lock pins. The pins use springs to ensure that only your key can turn the lock, but when they malfunction or jam, it won't open for anyone. This often happens in older locks or with new keys that have burrs still attached. The key may also have been cut incorrectly, or something could be broken off inside. If that's the case, call a locksmith because the following tips likely won't work.

2. Align Tumblers

locksmithInside the lock, there are tumblers with pins of varying lengths that prevent it from opening without the proper key. These are often found in deadbolts or key-in-knob style locks. To reset them, try pushing the key in as far as it will go and turn it back to the original position. Then push it in again and pull out.

3. Use Lubrication

WD-40 can help loosen the lock, so you're able to pull the key out. Stick the straw nozzle into the hole and spray while wiggling the key in the lock. You should be able to pull it out. If it doesn't budge, don't yank or twist it too much, because it could break. If at this point the key is unmoveable, call a locksmith as they have the proper tool to pry open any lock.
