Whether it’s for a special celebration or corporate event, cruising the open waters on a boat is a fun and unique experience. However, if you’ve never been on a boat or are prone to motion sickness, you may want to prepare ahead of time to ensure you can enjoy your trip. Before you set sail, review the following do’s and don’ts of preventing seasickness.

Do:

Take medication ahead of time.

Several kinds of medicine are available over the counter to address motion and seasickness. While Dramamine® and Bonine® are the most common, you can also talk to your doctor about which medication would be best suited to your needs.

Because the medication is more effective once it’s in the bloodstream, you should start taking it 12 to 24 hours before your excursion.

Focus on a fixed object.

boatOn the boat, pick a seat or spot outside where you can view faraway objects. Focusing on a fixed object at a distance provides your brain with a reference point to make sense of the movement you’re experiencing and decrease feelings of disorientation.

Don’t:

Skip a meal.

While it’s not advisable to have a large meal before your boating trip, you also don’t want to skip eating, as this can cause your blood sugar to drop and make you feel dizzy. Snack on something light and easy to digest, like a banana, nuts, or a peanut butter sandwich.

Consume alcohol or caffeine.

Alcohol and caffeine are both known to exacerbate seasickness because they accelerate dehydration. To be safe, avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine at least 24 hours before your excursion. Also, drink plenty of water.
