Stowing your furniture in a storage unit is helpful when you can’t move pieces into a new residence right away. Storage is also a solution if you’re downsizing. However, you must protect your belongings before placing them in a unit. Here are a few tips for ensuring all pieces are in top condition when you return for them.

How to Prepare Furniture for Storage

1. Clean Everything

Don’t forget to dry all items thoroughly after cleaning to prevent mildew and odors.

2. Pack Items

Glass tables and mirrors require extra protection. Wrap them in bubble wrap, then top off with packing paper to create padded layers.

Disassemble large furniture pieces, including wooden chairs and tables, to preserve floor space in storage. Place all loose bolts and screws in individually marked baggies, taping them to the parts they belong to.

3. Avoid Overstuffing the Unit

While you should take advantage of all of the square footage in your storage unit, avoid overstuffing it to prevent damage to your belongings. Leave at least a few inches between pieces so they don’t knock together.

Place larger and heavier objects, such as couches and table parts, towards the back. Small and fragile items, including side tables and mirrors, should go at the front where they’re always visible. For better accessibility, try leaving room for a small aisle stretching from the front to the back of the unit.
