All cars manufactured after 1996 have an OBD, or on-board diagnostics, computer system built into them. This system alerts drivers to potential issues with the car. If it detects a problem, the check engine light will turn on. If this occurs in your vehicle, a mechanic can plug a device into your car’s OBD port to retrieve a code, which can tell them more about potential problems. Here’s what three of the most common OBD codes mean.

Deciphering Common Car Codes

1. P0420

Put very simply, your car’s catalytic converter serves to detoxify the gases and chemicals emitted from your engine. If it stops doing this or isn’t doing it as well as it should, your car’s oxygen sensors will trigger the check engine light, and you’ll receive a P0420 code.

This could indicate that your catalytic converter is clogged with a buildup of carbon deposits, which requires a replacement. It could also indicate that at least one of your oxygen sensors is malfunctioning and falsely triggered the check engine light.

2. P0300

mechanicA P0300 code refers to an engine misfire caused by multiple cylinders, as opposed to just one cylinder. You’ll know your engine is misfiring if your car jerks, bucks, vibrates, shakes, or loses power while driving.

There are many possible causes. These include low fuel pressure, a vacuum leak, or a faulty coil. A mechanic can inspect your car further to determine the exact cause.

3. P0171

You’ll receive this code if your engine is receiving too little fuel or too much oxygen, which causes a lack of power and a rough idle. It could indicate a range of issues, including a weak fuel pump, a dirty mass airflow sensor, or clogged fuel injectors. You could also receive this code in error if one or more of your oxygen sensors are faulty.
