If you’re new to the world of golf, you’ll soon experience the excitement of a beautiful day out on the golf course. Yet, you’ll also find that the sport has an unspoken code. Players expect one another to follow etiquette, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the following principles.

How to Maintain Etiquette on the Golf Course

1. Know When to Be Quiet

When a fellow player is about to take their shot, cease talking to allow them to concentrate. Similarly, avoid standing in their putting lane on the green, or the trajectory between the player and the hole. This is not only distracting, but it could wind up flubbing their shot. It’s also advisable for safety reasons, as being struck with a ball or club can cause injury.

2. Maintain a Reasonable Pace

Although it’s expected that everyone will play at a reasonable pace, factors such as new players could slow the game down a bit. If a group behind you is consistently waiting for you to wrap up, consider letting them play the hole before you do so that you won’t slow them down for the entire round.

3. Let the Furthest Golfer Play First

In the game of golf, it’s considered etiquette to allow the player whose ball is the furthest from the hole to play first. The order may therefore change from one hole to the next. Or, if you’re the least seasoned player in your group, you may find yourself playing first fairly often. Avoid taking too many practice swings so that your fellow players also have time to concentrate on their game.
