A comfortable bed is important for getting adequate sleep. To keep it free of dust mites and other allergens, head to the laundromat and wash your bedding on a regular basis. Here’s some information about how often you should clean your bed linens and how to do it correctly.

Sheets & Pillowcases

Because your sheets and pillowcases come in direct contact with your skin, they should be washed at least once a week. In addition to keeping irritants like dust mites and pollen under control, weekly cleanings will also prevent the buildup of sweat, oil, and dead skin. Wash your sheets and pillowcases in cold or lukewarm water to avoid fading, and separate them from the rest of your laundry so they do not get torn by zippers or hooks.

Duvet Covers & Comforters

LaundromatIf you have a duvet cover, it should be washed monthly with your sheets and pillowcases. But your comforter only needs to be laundered once or twice a year (unless something is spilled on it) since the duvet keeps it protected. If your comforter does not have a duvet cover, however, it will need to be cleaned monthly. Wash the comforter separately. Depending on its size, you may have to find a laundromat that offers oversized machines for bedding.

Blankets

The frequency with which you wash your blankets should depend on how often they are used. If they tend to remain folded at the bottom of your bed, you probably only need to clean them every two or three months. But if you use them to cover yourself each night, they should be taken to the laundromat every week. Make sure you check the label on each blanket and follow the cleaning instructions.
