Quality wood furniture is a beautiful investment that can last a lifetime. If you want your furniture to be an heirloom, care for it properly, as neglect can leave it damaged, faded, or cracked. Here’s a guide to help you maintain your wooden pieces.

Do:

Re-wax the coating.

Wood furniture typically comes with a protective wax coating, and you should reinforce the barrier to prolong its life span. First, gently buff the surface with fine steel wool; this will even the wood and remove any raised impurities. Then, put liquid or paste wax on the furniture, applying it in small circles. Once you’ve waxed the entire piece, remove the excess by gently wiping it with a gritty sponge.

Be gentle.

Keep a set of coasters nearby to prevent this issue. If you have young children, place a plastic tablecloth over the surface to protect the furniture until they’re old enough to know how to be careful around it.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaning products.

Never apply an all-purpose cleaner on your wood furniture, as its harsh chemical ingredients will damage the wood. If you have a grimy spot, use a mixture of mild dish detergent and water, and wipe it onto the surface with a soft cloth. Quickly wipe away the lingering solution with a clean, dry rag.

Forget to dust.

Dust your wood furniture frequently, as this substance will scratch the furniture’s surface. Use a clean, soft, old T-shirt to wipe away dust. Gently wet the material, so the dust clings to it, preventing it from flying into the air and resettling on the surface. Dry the furniture with a terry cloth towel to wipe away excess moisture.
