Many people overlook their tongue when brushing. It can host countless bacteria and contribute to oral health issues. Establishing a care plan to prevent bad breath and other problems is essential. Use the following guide and work with your dentist to maintain a healthy tongue and smile.

A Guide to Tongue Care

Why It’s Important

Bacteria accumulate on your tongue throughout the day. They can hide in crevices, and from there, attack your teeth. Rotting food particles and pigments can turn your tongue unsightly colors and also lead to chronic bad breath.

dentistWhen you start cleaning your tongue, you’ll immediately reduce the likelihood of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Cleaning will also improve your sense of taste and remove the bacteria that cause issues like strep throat. Clean your tongue daily when you brush and floss your teeth.

How to Clean Your Tongue

Brush your tongue before or after you brush your teeth. Stick your tongue out and brush back and forth and side to side, covering all surfaces. If you have a poor gag reflex, purchase a dentist-approved toothbrush with a smaller head. If your tongue is discolored from coffee, tobacco smoke, and other stain-causing foods, brush with a solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 5 parts water.

Tongue scrapers can also be extremely effective. These tools have rounded bands that will extend horizontally across your tongue. Place it on top and gradually draw it toward the end of your tongue. When you’re finished, rinse your mouth and wipe your tongue with a washcloth. This ensures you don’t leave any food debris behind that could become caught in your teeth.
