Hearing aids are devices that improve hearing. Early personal auditory tools called ear trumpets or horns have made way for the more discrete, in-the-canal devices that are currently common. Even with technological advancements, there are still misconceptions about hearing aids.

Common Hearing Aid Myths

1. They’re Only for Seniors

Hearing aids are associated with seniors because the loss of the five senses correlates with old age. However, anyone can experience hearing loss, just like children and adults can have less than 20/20 vision. Newer models are small and fit inside the ear, and can match anyone’s skin color, making them discreet.

2. I’ll Have Perfect Hearing

hearing aidAlthough hearing aids will correct damaged eardrums significantly, your hearing won’t be perfect. There are two types of hearing loss: neurological and biological. Biological and neurological difficulties relate to an impairment or functional loss of the inner ear and its signals to the brain. Once the auditory connections are severed, they can’t come back. Using a digital ear aid to convert sound waves into numerical codes and amplify the sound you’re listening to is the optimal way of improving your hearing.

3. They’re Cheaper Online

Although this is true, the cheaper option isn’t always best. These devices shouldn’t be purchased online, because every person’s hearing loss is different, and their ear canals vary in size. Anyone with significant hearing loss should work with an audiologist, as they can help slow and prevent damage to the inner ear. An audiologist will look into your ear canal, examine the eardrum, and note any damage within your inner ear. They will also take measurements to ensure the hearing aid is perfectly sized and suits your needs.
