Scheduled maintenance is the best way for drivers to keep auto parts functioning properly and improve their vehicle’s resale value. While every car varies in what type of service is needed and when, consistent maintenance keeps your vehicle running smoothly for longer. Here’s what should be regularly done.

What Routine Car Maintenance Is Necessary?

1. Oil Changes

scheduled-maintenance-anchorageOil and oil filters need to be changed between 5,000 and 10,000 miles. A vehicle’s engine requires clean oil to lubricate its moving parts. Otherwise, dirt and debris can build up in the engine’s components, which can cause the engine to overheat and stop working.

2. Brake Service

Working brakes are essential for your safety and the safety of others on the road. Brake fluid should be replaced every 20,000 to 45,000 miles to prevent contamination and squishy brake pedals. Brake pads, which help your car slow or stop, and the metal discs called rotors that control them will also wear out over time, usually at around 50,000 miles.

3. Fluid Changes

Low transmission-fluid levels will cause your car’s transmission to burn up and the gear shift to malfunction. Unlike other fluids, which should be changed at scheduled intervals, transmission fluid should be checked at every scheduled service. Bad fluid will be dark in color and have a burnt odor. Transmission fluid that needs to be changed will often cause the check engine light in a vehicle’s dashboard to illuminate.

4. Battery Checks

Your car’s battery can last anywhere from two to five years if kept in excellent condition and depending on several factors. Extreme temperatures can cause battery cells to drain faster, and extended periods without use can also kill a battery. At each scheduled maintenance, a technician should test this auto part to make sure it’s in working condition.
