Good storage units should be clean and secure, but some pests can get into almost any space. While detecting pests at home is usually fast and easy, you might not notice them in your storage unit until after they’ve caused some damage. The do’s and don’ts below will help you protect your belongings and minimize the risk of a problem.

Do:

Raise items off the ground.

Although certain pests can get into elevated spaces, they prefer sources of food and shelter that are readily available. Raising items a couple of inches off the ground will discourage many of them. Put your belongings on clean pallets keep them off the ground and away from unwanted visitors. When you inspect the unit, you won’t have to lift heavy items off the ground to see if any pests are hiding underneath.

Use wrapping and containers.

Even if pests can reach the containers, they won’t be able to get in and damage delicate materials, such as paper and fabric. If you have to use cardboard boxes, use new ones that don’t have any holes. Wrap mattresses and unupholstered furniture in plastic to keep insects and rodents from chewing through the pieces. If you’re concerned about upholstery, look for a breathable wrapping material instead; this will help cut down on moisture and mildew.

Don’t:

Keep food in the storage unit.

Food can end up in storage units without you even knowing about it. There could be particles of food in a microwave or fridge, or some crumbs between sofa cushions. Clean your belongings thoroughly before storing them. If you take a snack or meal break when loading the unit, clean up all wrappers, napkins, and crumbs so you don’t accidentally leave pieces of food on the floor.

Leave your unit unattended.

You should check on your storage unit about once a month to make sure there are no signs of pest activity. The longer an infestation goes on without action, the worse the problem will get. Rodent droppings, holes in boxes, and bugs flying around in the unit are all signs that you might have an issue. If you spot any of these signs, ask the storage company to contact pest control.
