French fries, also known as chips, papas fritas, and pommes frites in various parts of the world, are a staple in U.S. restaurants. However, as popular as they may be on menus across the country, this is not where they were first discovered. Many are unaware of the beginnings of this culinary treat and how it turned into one of the most iconic foods in American culture. Below is a brief introduction to its history.

Where They Came From

To this day, there remains much debate over where French fries originated. While France has made many attempts to lay claim, most agree that the French fry likely came from Belgium. Potatoes didn’t make their way to Europe until the late 1500s, and they landed in Belgium when they did. It took nearly another century for them to gain popularity. According to Belgian teachings, the earliest version of French fries was created in the late 1600s when villagers would replace their fish during the winter months with fried potatoes.

How They Came to the United States

restaurantIt was during World War I when American soldiers first discovered French fries while they were stationed in Belgium. Because French is the language most widely spoken in that part of Europe, the Americans called the food “French fries,” and the name has remained the same in U.S. restaurants and households. In the early 19th century, President Thomas Jefferson references French fries in a manuscript he wrote. Some say that the dish was served at a White House dinner.
