Like any electronic device, wireless mics require proper maintenance in order to function. If you’re setting them up for a band to use during a concert, these microphones can easily be damaged if you’re not careful. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to prevent this.

How to Properly Maintain Your Wireless Mics

1. Use a Mic Belt

Most wireless microphone systems utilize belt-worn transmitter packs, which can get sweaty if they’re clipped directly to clothing or exposed to bare skin. Sweat, which carries salt, water, and oils can seep into the transmitter and corrode its internal components, like the circuit board. Securing your transmitter in a mic belt or carrier pouch will go a long way in prolonging its life by protecting it from sweat.

2. Use a Windscreen

wireless micsA windscreen is a small foam protective covering that goes over your microphone. Its primary function is to improve sound quality by blocking background noises, like the sound of wind. It also protects your mic from dust, debris, and other obstructions, like lipstick, that can clog it and reduce sound quality.

3. Dry it Out

When the act is finished using it, you should keep it in a dry, well-ventilated place, like a hook on a wall or an open drawer, and let it dry out before using it again. This is to ensure that any moisture evaporates. Excessive moisture can cause corrosion of the internal components, which can significantly damage the microphone. Make sure to disconnect the device from the transmitter because the input connector is subject to corrosion as well.
