When a strong rainstorm blows through, you want to ensure the trees on your property will withstand heavy precipitation and winds. If trees are unsafe, it can spell disaster for your home. From tree trimming to removal, below are five ways to prepare.

How to Prepare Trees for a Rainstorm

1. Trim & Prune Trees

Tree trimming is vital before a storm. Make sure loose branches are trimmed and remove areas that are weak to avoid their falling. Prune healthy branches at optimal angles of 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. This also encourages good growth, no matter the weather.

2. Fix Lopsided Crowns

If your tree’s crown is uneven or lopsided, remove the branches that are leaning and pulling the tree’s center of gravity off. This will stabilize the tree and reduce the risk of it toppling during heavy winds.

3. Remove Rubbing Branches

4. Look for Rot

Rot weakens trees, and during a storm, a compromised arbor is a dangerous one. Look at the roots, stems, and branches for signs of decay and fungi. Also, watch for cracks and splits in the trunk, and call the professionals for tree removal to eliminate problematic greenery.

5. Call the Experts

When storm season is approaching, call your tree trimming team to clean up the trees on your property. This ensures that they will be safe and stable no matter the weather. If your trees are close to power lines, inform your power company and have a licensed arborist handle making the trees safe.  Do not try to trim near power lines yourself.
