Both dental implants and dentures replace missing teeth and help restore a brighter, fuller, and more comfortable smile. But they each achieve this goal in distinct ways. To determine which option is most appropriate for you, explore some of the key differences between implants and dentures below.

Implants

Implants are artificial teeth that are surgically placed in the jawbone. The implantation procedure involves first inserting a metal post into the jaw, where it fuses with the bone over time, and then topping it with a crown that looks just like the surrounding teeth. Implants can replace one or just a few missing teeth, or two of them can be used to anchor a dental bridge into place. Implants need to be looked after with the same care and diligence with which you look after your natural teeth, and this will ensure they last for many years.

Dentures

denturesDentures are removable artificial teeth customized to fit the contours of the wearer's mouth. They can replace a full set of teeth or a portion of missing teeth; the latter is called a partial. When a person gets fitted for dentures, they may need to first have some teeth extracted so they can comfortably accommodate the denture plate. While dentures do not fit as securely as implants, you may be able to get fixed dentures that attach directly to implants and offer a tighter hold. Typical dentures will last several years, but they might need to be remade or adjusted after long-term wear and tear or after changes have occurred in the mouth.
