Dirt, debris, allergens, and pet hair can become trapped in your HVAC ductwork if not cleaned regularly. They can then flow freely throughout your home, tainting the air. Your primary defense against these particles is HVAC filters. There are several types of filters to add to your heating and cooling system, and you can use the following guide to ensure you choose the one that fulfills your needs.

A Guide to HVAC Filters

1. Fiberglass

Air filters are judged by a MERV, or minimum efficiency reporting value, rating. This determines the efficiency of a filter. Flat-paneled fiberglass filters have one of the lowest MERV ratings. They’ll capture most of the debris circulating in a heating and cooling system and are the most affordable option. They aren’t ideal for capturing smaller dust particles, however.

2. Pleated

While this is enough to handle more advanced filtering needs, it also means they don’t provide the best air passage. When the air has to struggle to get through a filter, especially when it’s clogged, your HVAC system has to overwork. This can place additional stress on parts and lead to energy waste.

3. HEPA

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters use a fine mesh system to capture even the smallest particles. These include tobacco smoke and bacteria. They have a MERV rating between 17 and 20 and are ideal if you’re sensitive to allergens or have respiratory conditions that require a clean air supply. HEPA filters are a bit more expensive, and they’re not easy to install, so work with an HVAC contractor for proper installation.

4. Reusable

Reusable filters will save you money, but they have the lowest MERV rating, between one and four. They can also develop mold if they aren’t dried correctly after washing. These filters are useful for temporary situations, such as during a particularly dusty home renovation.
