Many college textbooks are only useful for one or two semesters. If you no longer use a book, move it into storage to safeguard it. Here are some ways to preserve your investments so they’re in top shape when you come back for them.

How to Prepare Your Textbooks for Storage

1. Clean Them

Even if your books have been sitting in your dorm room for a while, you should still make sure they’re clean and ready for storage. Use a soft cloth to dust each book. Avoid water, which could affect the print.

If you spot any insect eggs that look like tiny, black seeds, remove these as well. They are common between pages and bindings.

2. Use Dust Jackets

You should always store books in their original jackets. These are made to protect the paper.

Make sure the corners aren’t tucked into any pages and rest against the covers. If you can’t find jackets for certain books, wrap them in packing paper for similar protection.

3. Choose High-Quality Boxes

storageIf you’re storing your books for a short period, such as over the summer or between semesters, cardboard moving boxes will be sufficient. Make sure they’re rigid and can support the weight of the books.

If you’ll be storing them indefinitely, consider acid-free archival boxes. These are meant to protect the print over prolonged periods.

4. Pack Boxes Correctly

Most books can be packed either horizontally or vertically inside boxes. However, lay large ones flat to distribute their weight evenly.

Avoid overpacking boxes, which makes them more difficult to carry. Use more boxes when necessary. Since empty space can jostle the books around, fill extra spaces with bubble wrap.
