The first few weeks after bringing home a new pet can be tricky. As they acclimate to the new environment and learn where to relieve themselves, your carpet can face a few accidents. While you should be prepared for carpet cleaning, this guide will help you understand your new pet and how to potty-train them.

Common Reasons Why Pets Have Accidents on Carpet

Potty-training isn’t overly complicated for a cat. Once they have a litter box set up, they tend to do their business in the same spot. However, if you’ve adopted a kitten that wasn’t already trained, they could have a few accidents before they learn. Older cats may also do this if they’re stressed or uncomfortable in a new environment.

As dogs typically have to go outside to relieve themselves, potty-training them tends to be a bit more difficult. Puppies often have issues with bladder control. Moving to a new home can be stressful, and sometimes, urinating on carpet is a way to make the place smell more like them.

How to Protect Your Carpet

Make sure these provide adequate privacy by choosing spots away from regular foot traffic and noise. If your kitten has already had a few accidents on the carpet, place their boxes on these spots and slowly move them closer to your desired placements every day. You can also discourage cats from urinating in certain areas by making them places for feeding or drinking.

If you have a new puppy, bring them outside every couple of hours to relieve themselves. An older dog will usually need to go every five to six hours. If your pup waits to go outside, give them a treat and lots of love. As they learn, you can keep them in a kennel or a playpen during the day, letting them out every five hours. Increase their time spent alone as accidents become fewer.
