The springs on your garage door are responsible for helping the structure rise and fall smoothly. Over time, the springs can lose their integrity and eventually break, preventing the door from moving at all. There are two main spring designs: torsion and extension. By learning more about each, you’ll be able to identify which are used in your garage and identify any issues sooner.

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs will be located above the door. The spring is affixed to a metal tube, which is connected to cable drums situated near the upper corners of the door opening. Torsion systems use the tension from one or two springs to keep the door steady as the motor lifts or closes it. A larger structure typically requires two, while a lighter, single door can operate with one.

These models are a reliable choice for homeowners who are concerned about broken springs. The average torsion spring has the potential to last for up to 10,000 cycles.

Extension Springs

By contrast, extension springs are located on the sides of the door and are attached by small metal loops at each end. Doors may have as many as two loops, or may feature an even sturdier clip designed to improve the door’s stability. The spring is affixed to a pulley system that helps the structure rise and fall of the garage door.

Unlike torsion springs, which turn, extension springs expand fully and then contract when the door rises and falls. This continuous stretching can prove hard on the system, particularly if you open the door frequently. The average life expectancy of an extension system is approximately 10,000 cycles.
