Updating your church’s sound system is an exciting endeavor, but it can be hard to know where to begin. There are many factors to consider, including the acoustics of the space and equipment like mixers, equalizers, and microphones. The following three items are some of the most essential components to setting up a sound system for your church.

How to Set Up a Church Sound System

1. Mixer

A mixer does what its name suggests: it mixes audio signals together. Your church’s sound system will likely have multiple sources of sound, such as instruments and microphones, and the mixer allows you to combine these sources and control the relative sound of each to create a balanced output.  A digital mixer can also be controlled remotely, such as from an iPad® or another device. Thus, if you can only fit it in an inconvenient corner of the church, you can still control the mix easily.

2. Equalizer

Your equalizer lets you tailor your church’s sound system to its architecture.  If renovations or other changes are made to your church, adjust the equalizer accordingly.  The use of equalization is the final step in the system installation process after the proper design and placement of the speakers.

3. Microphone

Microphone can be used to capture everything from sermons to musical performances. Different microphones are used for different contexts. For example, a microphone for sung vocals should have a windscreen that blocks out background  wind/air noise and protects it against moisture and dirt.  For your church’s pulpit, you can install a permanent microphone, which is both small and powerful. The same is true for a choir microphone, except you can hang it from the ceiling over the choir. Proper microphone distribution and placement will allow you to customize the audio output of your church’s sound system. Consider your church’s size and needs before purchasing microphones.
