If you’re due for an oral exam, but are nervous, you’re not alone. As many as 20% of Americans avoid going to the dentist out of anxiety. By learning more about what to expect at the appointment, you can relieve much of the stress surrounding it. Here’s a brief guide to professional cleanings and exams so you can enter your next dental visit with confidence.

The Cleaning

During a routine oral exam, your hygienist will start by removing any hardened tartar on your teeth using special tools. This is called scaling. Next comes brushing, flossing, and polishing.

While you’re familiar with brushing and flossing, you may not be used to polishing. This process is similar to brushing and helps removes surface stains, so you leave the office with a brighter, more luminous smile. Some polishing pastes also contain ingredients that contribute to the remineralization of enamel.

The Exam

oral examsIf you need new x-rays, the hygienist will take them either before or after your cleaning. Your dentist will then review the x-rays before examining your teeth.

The exam will be painless and noninvasive. Your dentist will inspect your teeth, tongue, gums, throat, and jaw for any abnormalities. Preventive care is essential for maintaining oral health, and identifying issues at these exams will allow your dentist to treat them before they escalate.
