Spring is the time for your lawn to start growing once again. A healthy start at the beginning of the season will help it stay lush and green throughout the year. Get your grass on the right track with the right lawnmower repair and lawn care steps.

How to Care for Your Lawn This Spring

1. Ready Your Lawn Mower

Get your lawnmower ready at the beginning of the season so it will do its job properly. Change the oil, air filter, and spark plug. Clean the undercarriage and have the blade sharpened, then set it to about three inches above the ground. Once you’ve fueled it up, set the mower in the sun for a couple of days. This will help it warm up, and you can turn it on to test it out. If you notice any issues, have lawnmower repairs performed right away.

2. Rake

It will remove the thatch that the dormant lawn had accumulated over the winter. Clearing this out allows nutrients, water, and sunlight to get to the lawn’s roots.

3. Fertilize

A light fertilization in the spring can fuel growth, but don’t overdo it. Too much fertilizer or mulch will support weed growth and may make the lawn susceptible to disease. Choose your fertilizer based on your lawn type. Your landscaper can help you choose the right one.

4. Prevent Weeds

Apply a preemergent herbicide along with your fertilizer. This will form a shield across your lawn to prevent weeds from taking root. Do not aerate the lawn after applying, since that will break through the shield, allowing weeds to take root in the holes. If weeds do appear, pull them immediately.
