When you have back pain, getting a comfortable night’s sleep—or any sleep at all—is a challenge. Tossing and turning can force you to lie awkwardly, resulting in other pain elsewhere, and lack of sleep leaves you feeling tired, moody, and unproductive at work. Here are three ways to alleviate back pain and get a solid night’s rest again.

3 Ways to Get a Good Night’s Sleep With Back Pain

1. Buy a Comfortable Mattress

A comfortable mattress is essential for restful, quality sleep. But choosing the right mattress is what makes the difference. If your hips are wider than your waist, a soft mattress allows your hips to drop lower, creating a straight line. If your waist and hips line up, opt a firm mattress for more spinal support. When shopping for mattresses, browse through different soft and firm options to find the right one for you.

2. Strengthen Your Core

back painCore muscles support the spine and improve posture, so strengthening your abs, lower back, and obliques takes pressure off the back and keeps your spine straighter. Activities like yoga and holding a plank every day for at least 30 seconds are excellent for developing a strong core. Doing more exercise promotes better sleep generally, especially any activities you do in the fresh air, such as jogging.

3. Release Tension Before Sleeping

Meditation and yoga are excellent for sleep for two reasons. First, they relax the muscles and relieve any tension in your body. Second, they reduce stress and relax the mind, which promotes natural sleep.

Speak with a chiropractor before doing yoga, as there may be some moves you shouldn’t attempt with back pain. Developing a bedtime routine also encourages a more restful night’s sleep. Drinking chamomile tea, setting a no-screen curfew, and meditating before getting into bed allow you to wind down and get into a better sleep state.
