As with any new experience, your first massage may have you wondering how to best prepare. While there aren’t many activities you have to do to get ready, there are a few practices you may want to explore to get the most out of your massage therapy experience.

How to Get Ready for Your First Massage

1. Wear Comfortable Clothes

During most massages, you’ll disrobe down to your comfort level. To make it as easy as possible to slip in and out of your garments, choose loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. You’ll likely feel extremely relaxed after your session, so the fewer buttons and zippers you have to worry about, the better. Consider leaving any jewelry at home, since you may need to remove it anyway.

2. Hydrate

massage therapyMassage therapy releases inflammation and stress from your muscles by strategically kneading the soft tissue. While this is beneficial and helps get rid of toxins, the process could have a mild dehydrating effect. You should, therefore, aim to drink ample water before and after a massage to stay hydrated.

3. Talk to Your Massage Therapist

While you can simply sit back and enjoy your massage therapy session once it begins, you can ensure the best experience by taking a few moments to speak with your therapist in advance.

Let them know of any areas that are bothering you so they can spend extra time there. You can also mention any places you’d like them to avoid. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you’d like them to adjust the pressure.
