Young or old, playful or tired, every dog boasts a different personality and requires specific care. The proper dog supplies, especially food, also differ significantly between dogs. Below are a few options and their benefits, so you can consult with your veterinarian to find out which option is best for your dog.

A Brief Guide to Dog Food

1. Dry

Kibble is the most common and economical food, and it provides a simple serving option for dog owners. You don’t need to worry about any thawing, cooking, or preparation. Just store dry dog food in a sealed container in the pantry, scoop it into your dog’s bowl, and watch them eat. Kibble also cleans your dog’s teeth as chewing the crunchy food reduces tartar buildup.

2. Moist

On the opposite side, wet food usually comes from cans or pouches. Older dogs or those suffering from poor dental health enjoy moist food as it is easier on their teeth and digestion. Its long shelf life and larger taste profile make up for its higher price point.

However, watch out for the water content when buying moist food. Food that contains more than 75% of water may not provide your dog with enough protein. Also, make sure that the food is high in digestible protein so that your furry friend can absorb all of the food’s nutrients.

You will find semi-moist food in the form of dog treats shaped like burgers, pork chops, or malleable pellets. When searching for treats and other dog supplies, keep in mind that semi-moist food is commonly the least nutritious and usually does not contain enough nutrients for your dog’s daily health. You can spoil your dog with a delicious snack, but steer clear of solely serving them this type of food.

4. Raw

A raw meal usually comes from frozen or freeze-dried meat with bones and organs added for extra phosphorus and calcium. Because of their strong stomach acids, dogs thrive on raw food and can digest it easily. This diet is healthier than most other dog food options, but it can also be the most expensive and time-consuming.

While raw food’s frozen nature will deter any bacteria from growing, you must remember to wash the food bowl and any utensils with hot soapy water. This prevents bacteria since the food is no longer frozen. You can usually seal and store leftovers on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator for a few days, but always read the packaging and carefully follow its instructions.
