Braces are the most effective solution for tooth malalignment. They require specific care to work properly. If you’re new to braces, you should adopt healthy habits to ensure the best outcome. Use the following guide to ensure you keep your mouth clean and avoid common braces-related issues.

Do:

Avoid harmful foods.

You’ll need to make a few dietary adjustments. Avoid sticky and hard foods and treats. These may break brackets loose and are hard to remove from between teeth. Also, be careful of popcorn seeds, corn on the cob, and tough foods such as beef jerky, that can also damage the braces.

Purchase special cleaning tools.

bracesBraces introduce new dental care challenges. Maneuvering a toothbrush and floss around the brackets isn’t easy, so invest in braces-friendly tools. A water-jet flosser will quickly blast bacteria from the brackets and hardware. You can purchase a flossing wand as well. Choose a toothbrush with a smaller head that’s easier to move around. These ensure your dental care doesn’t suffer.

Don’t:

Downplay discomfort.

You will experience some discomfort while your teeth are moving. However, the discomfort is never so severe that over the counter pain relievers cannot reduce or eliminate the pain.  Use orthodontic wax to cushion long wires or posts that may rub on your cheeks.

Skip dental cleanings.

Don’t forget your dentist. You should still see them twice a year for cleaning. They’ll look for signs of decay, cavities, gingivitis, and other oral health issues. They can then work with your orthodontist to resolve these issues and prevent future incidents.
