Pools can lose water for a variety of reasons, like evaporation or spillovers during normal use. If you find yourself refilling the pool more frequently than usual, it’s possible that you have a leak. Before you call a swimming pool contractor to conduct an inspection, do what you can to confirm the issue and locate the leak.

What to Do If You Suspect a Pool Leak

1. Monitor the Water Level

Get an empty five-gallon bucket, and place it on one of the pool’s steps. Fill the container until its water level aligns with the pool’s; then use a waterproof marker or duct tape to record the level inside the bucket. Turn off the circulation pump, and leave the container and pool alone for 24 hours.

If their water levels remain evenly aligned after 24 hours, you probably don’t have an issue. However, if your pool’s water level is lower than the bucket’s, you likely have a leak.

2. Locate the Leak

Enter the pool, and move slowly toward the location; do your best to avoid disturbing the water. Squirt a little dye near the area with a suspected leak. If the leak exists, and the water is calm, the dye will gravitate toward it.

3. Call an Expert

If you still can’t locate the leak using dye, you should call a professional swimming pool contractor. While the above steps are viable and simple ways to test for leaks, they aren’t substitutes for the specialized equipment that an expert possesses. Contractors have access to industry-grade cameras, air compressors, and microphones to definitively test the pool for leaks.
