If you’re in the process of buying your first vehicle, be sure to consider what it will cost to secure auto insurance. Like most states, Wisconsin requires drivers to have minimum coverage. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe on the road and comply with the law.

What Are the Auto Insurance Requirements in Wisconsin?

Drivers in Wisconsin are required to have liability insurance before they can operate vehicles. The minimum amount required for property damage is $10,000. This covers repairs to another driver’s vehicle if you’re at-fault for an accident involving them.

The state also requires you to secure at least $25,000 in auto insurance to pay for expenses associated with the injury or death of a person after an accident. $50,000 worth of coverage is required to cover injuries and death of more than one person.

What Are the Consequences of Driving Without Insurance?

The penalty for driving without coverage is a fine of up to $500. Wisconsin may also issue a $10 fine if the driver or car owner fails to show proof of insurance to an officer. If authorities determine that the driver provided fraudulent information, they can issue a fine of up to $5,000.

Unlike some states, Wisconsin doesn’t require drivers to provide proof of insurance if they are obtaining driver’s licenses or registering vehicles. However, the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles may still request proof, particularly in cases involving the reinstatement of a driver’s license after it has been suspended or revoked.
