When fitting laundry into your busy schedule, it’s tempting to throw everything you have into the washer and dryer together. But to keep your clothes looking exceptional and fitting well, you need to understand which fabrics can shrink and need special care while washing. Here’s more insight into proper laundry care.

Fabric Shrinkage Guide

Cotton

Garments made from 100% cotton are heat sensitive and may shrink in hot water or a hot dryer. Cotton stretches easily as well, so warmth can also reshape these items. To avoid shrinkage, wash cotton in cold water and use a low dryer setting. You should also consider line drying these garments for better protection.

Wool

Any type of wool fibers (except “superwash,” typically used for socks) will shrink in hot water, as the agitation of a washing machine causes the individual fibers to mat together. A hot dryer can transform an XL sweater into a dense, thick, doll-sized garment.

If the garment tag indicates wool or even a wool blend, hand wash and dry flat. Better yet, dry clean your favorite sweaters and delicate fibers such as cashmere or lambswool.

Silk

laundryPure silk is delicate and easily damaged in the laundry by agitation and hot temperatures. Like wool, it is made from protein fibers, which shrink when heat is applied. Different types of silk vary in texture, from smooth or nubby raw silk to shiny, woven dupioni. Hand wash and dry all silk items, or invest in dry cleaning for these fabrics.

Linen

Spun from flax fibers, linen comes in many weights and is often blended with cotton or rayon. Linen is softened by washing but will shrink and wrinkle. Dry clean linen to keep it crisp and avoid shrinkage. If you want a softer, wrinkled look, use the delicate laundry cycle and an easy-care, low heat dryer setting.
