When your supplier drops off your oil delivery, storing it properly can make all the difference. Good storage habits will extend the oil’s lifespan and keep your heating system functioning properly. Know what to do and which common mistakes to avoid to let your heating oil last even longer.

Do:

Inspect your tank.

In addition to your annual service, conduct a visual inspection yourself once every few months. Look at the tank, all lines to and from the tank, the fittings, and the valves. Corrosion is a common issue, as well as tilting and cracking as the tank settles. If you notice damage, have the tank immediately repaired or replaced.

Use additives.

juneau heating oilAdditives are an effective way to extend the oil’s shelf life by slowing the breeding of bacteria. Your home heating oil supplier can help you choose the right additives for your climate, needs, and oil types. Don’t just pick one yourself, since using the wrong additive could make your oil become dangerously combustible.

Don’t:

Try to fix old oil.

Over time, bacteria forms inside the tank from the acids and moisture. That bacteria contamination deteriorates the oil’s combustible traits. Once the oil has deteriorated, it cannot be fixed. People try to use additives after the fact to restore the oil, but this decay cannot be undone. Instead, throw out the old oil and add brand-new oil.

Stockpile heating oil.

No. 2 grade heating oil, the most common type used, usually lasts between 18 and 24 months with the right additives. To be safe, only fill your tank with oil that you can intend to use within the next 12 months. If you add any more, you risk ending up with compromised oil that you’ll eventually have to throw out.
